I had always thought that your memory was fixed. What you had was what you had and there was very little or nothing you could do to change that.
I then discovered that there were these fascinating competitions called memory championships. With my new-found interest in memory techniques, I took it upon myself to train and WIN this competition. That was my goal.
Fast-forward a few years later and I had won it four times, set numerous memory records along the way, and earned the coveted title of "Grandmaster of Memory."
My "average" memory had transformed into a champion-level memory.
